Release Day!

Today sees the release of Bull at the Gate, a contemporary romance with a hint of paranormal. Authors talk about the book of their heart and this is probably mine. The idea for the book simmered in my mind for years and I love the characters of Alex and Dee. Plus, Dee's relationship with her grandmother is so close to mine with my own beloved Nan, that I wrote those scenes with a lump in my throat.

Daddy's Boy

Oh, yes. Zorro is indeed a daddy's boy. He waits patiently at the bottom of the stairs for AJ, at the front door when he washes the car or mows the lawn. Follows him around like, well, a puppy dog.

Sometimes he has a little cry if hubby's away longer and looks at me as if it's all my fault. Of course, I try not to spoil him, but it's virtually impossible when he aims those big puppy eyes at me.

He's been with us just over three weeks and we are totally in love. He's an absolute joy and such a good boy - mostly :)

CCLL - Making a Difference

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant disaster. The Chernobyl Children’s Life Line was founded in 1991 to support the children horribly affected by the disaster. My mum is a great supporter of the Portsmouth and Hayling Island Link pictured. Every June families and supporters host a visit from children from Belarus for a four week recuperative break, away from contaminated food, water and air which boosts their immune systems and makes a real difference to their health and lives. I was told that it can add up to two years to their anticipated life span.

This year the children, from the Mogilev Region, near Minsk, arrive on 1 June and during their stay will take part in a whole range of activities organised by the charity and supported by Portsmouth City Council and local businesses. These activities include visits to the circus, the Isle of Wight, Portsmouth Dockyard, the Royal Marines Museum, Portsmouth Football Club, Butlins holiday camp, etc. The children have the opportunity to try kayaking, crazy golf, ride on a hovercraft, go sailing and swimming at nearby beaches. My mum has helped organise a clothing day where the host families help children to select from donated clothes. There are parties, Christmas in June as well as dental and optician appointments.

CCLL was conceived in 1991 by Victor Mizzi, MBE, with the following aim:

“To relieve the need and sickness of children affected by radiation following the explosion at the Chernoby nuclear reactor on the 26th April 1986.”

It’s important not to forget the heartbreaking consequences of this event and to keep it alive in the public domain.

All donations to the charity are used solely for the children and no administration fees are deducted from the funds.

How sad. John Barry has died at the age of 77. He is surely one of the greatest modern composers and his Out of Africa soundtrack is one of my all time faves. His music is so distinctive, enigmatic and simply beautiful. What an amazing talent and how lucky we were to have him in the world.

Bath's Christmas Market

The Bath Christmas Market is in full swing and despite disruption caused by the snow (very early for us this year)there are as many people, if not more, enjoying the experience.

Bath is a lovely place all year round, but during December it becomes something special. The added bonus this year is walking through the city with the surrounding hills blanketed in snow - it's quite something.

Loads to do here in December: there's the Market, of course, plus the opportunity for festive dining at the Roman Baths and Pump Rooms (where incidentally I'll be enjoying afternoon tea next week with a friend). Add to this the Thermae Spa which is very atmospheric at night, especially if you brave the rooftop pool with its vista of the night-lit Abbey and rooftops of Bath.

Ah, how I love this city :)

Oh dear, it's been ages since I last posted. Can't believe where the time has gone. I've been working though, and trying to get to grips with the latest WiP which has given me some angst. This has been the hardest book I've written and I'm not sure why. Doubts have crept in about the process, my ability, and pretty much everything else. I keep getting bogged down and it's been hard clawing out of the mire. Writing-wise, I've gone for days without a coherent thought and it's been scary. Thankfully, I'm back on track now and enjoying the process again.

One of the things I have been doing during this lean writing spell is to read about the writing process and listed below are some great books I've found which have helped get me back in the saddle:

Writing the Breakout Novel Workbook by Donald Maass - do the exercises, they really help focus the mind
The Plot Thickens by Noah Lukeman - a pick-up/put-down book with great writing prompts
The Complete Writer's Guide to Heroes and Heroines by Cowden, LaFever,Viders - informative and motivational
On Writing by Stephen King - funny and inspirational

I've loads more on my bookshelf and plan to work through them all, but writing comes first and it's by writing, writing, writing that we really learn our craft.

Axa Assistance? .... a misnomer if there ever was one!

We were caught up in the Eurostar delays over the 2009 Christmas period and had to abandon our trip. We had travel insurance via Axa Assistance through our friendly bank and as this was absolutely no fault of ours and lay solely in the hands of Eurostar (who, incidentally, handled the situation abysmally)expected the compensation claim to go through without incident.

Wrong! Axa have refused to pay us a penny. They say that "you must check in according to the itinerary supplied to you" ... err, Axa? Are you the only insurance company on the planet who didn't hear the international news that Eurostar had five trains stuck in the channel tunnel on 19th and 20th December 2009? Or that St Pancras was closed as no trains were running? When trains began running again, on a very limited basis, we couldn't get a seat, but according to Axa "lack of seat availability is not a listed reason for abandonment". Oh really? Thanks for that, Axa. Now we can save some money by asking Eurostar to strap us onto the roof!

Last Friday I blogged about Men in Black over at Lucy Monroe's RAH Conference, the blog was hardly up when I found another gorgeous specimen to add to my list. Now I've had my eye on David Gandy for a while now, ever since oggling him in the add for Dolce and Gabbana (if you missed it, you can check it out here. He stepped onto the Jonathan Ross show on Friday night and set my heart a-palpitating. Sauve, sophisticated and hormone-meltingly gorgeous in his black suit and white shirt, he also has a sense of humour and self-effacing charm. He confessed to a weakness for biscuits and a struggle with his weight when he was younger. What a man! More from Mr Gandy please.

Tea at the Pump Rooms

I recently shared a very pleasant hour with colleagues enjoying afternoon tea in Bath's beautiful Pump Rooms. Yet another fabulous benefit (there are many) of living near this most beautiful of English cities.

Although I read just about anything, I love writing contemporary romance, but wallowing in the genteel atmosphere of a bygone Bath, I'm inspired to write a Regency romance. Hmm... now where shall I start?

Bahrain Grand Prix? Dull as Ditchwater

Yesterday's kick-off to the 2010 Grand Prix season was so boring I struggled to stay awake. The most exciting part of the whole thing was when Hamilton said there was some vibration at the front of his car, but even that didn't stir me. Eventually, I turned the sound up and let the roar of the engines lull me to sleep. At least Melbourne can't be any worse...can it? Time would have been better spent working on the WiP.

What are you vibrating today?

Now there's a question, and one I'll now be asking myself every chance I get. See, I've been interested in the metaphysical for as long as I can remember, ever since I found a book my Dad was reading called Bring out the Magic in your Mind by Al Koran. Since then I've studied popular psychology books and any number of mind power tomes, most of which have been really useful in changing my perceptions about myself and life in general. But the Law of Attraction is something which really grabs my interest. Theoretically, I get it, but putting it into practice is something else.

So, as one of my goals for 2010 I intend to study the concept more deeply to really get to grips with it. And guess what, my intention has already born fruit. Yesterday I discovered Michael Losier, I was going to say by chance, but understanding how intention works, I know that's not the case. In all my previous Internet searches on the subject I've never been drawn to him, but then I found a couple of audio downloads where Michael talks about the Law of Attraction. Wowee! I learned more about putting the Law into practice in an hour than the last couple of years. Michael has a no-nonsense, practical approach which you can start using right this minute. It's all about the vibrations we're sending out into the universe which are either positive or negative. These vibrations influence what we're attracting into our lives. Michael urges us to regularly check in with ourselves and ask what vibration we're sending out, because we can be sure to attract right back more of the very same.

Festive Greetings

Hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas. Ours started off in a disappointing way, when a trip we had planned to the south of France was cancelled courtesy of the Eurostar fiasco. Intending to be away, we didn't have any festivities planned, but the phone didn't stop ringing with calls from friends with last minute invites for us to join them over the holidays. It really lifted our spirits and reminded us of the true message of the season. It's not about overseas holidays, gifts and eating too much (all of which I love, don't get me wrong) but about the people who care about us - really care about us. We're blessed with wonderful, fabulous friends. Extra-special people who enrich our lives. So it's been a very happy Christmas in the Jones's household and to paraphrase Charles Dickens I'd like to send my friends a special message - God bless you, every one.

Sad day for Togs as Terry says goodbye...

Terry Wogan signed off his breakfast show for the last time today after delivering a wonderfully poignant speech that left me in tears.

I remember listening to Terry as a young newly-wed, far from home, missing my family dreadfully, and his unique brand of humour often cheered me up. My late dad was a fan and we'd share stories over the phone about what Terry had said that day, laughing together until we could barely speak. Terry's banter helped when I lost my dad, my grandparents, and other loved ones, including my much beloved dog, Barney.

In Terry's goodbye speech he mentioned that his listeners were like friends, and strangely that's how he felt to me. A friend. His lovely wit, his cheery voice, the sheer lunacy of the stories he told.

This morning I was late for work as I sat in my car listening to the last few minutes of Terry's show. It was freezing cold - the coldest day of the year - but hot tears slid down my face as he gave his speech. He said he was honoured to be "Someone that you're close enough to laugh with, to poke fun at and occasionally when the world just seemed a little too cruel to shed a tear with. And the years together have not only been a pleasure but a privilege."

Right back at ya, Terry.

Refreshed and Recharged

Back from holiday in the South of France with a ton of ideas, not to mention some heady "hero" inspiration. Those Mediterranean males can certainly hold a girl's attention :)

Got a couple of plots boiling as well. Monte Carlo is one of my most favourite places in the world and it never fails to inspire a tale or two of passion and seduction in such a beautiful and glamorous setting. My fingers are itching to get the keyboard smoking!

There was an added bonus to our recent trip - fabulous art exhibits were scattered around the Principality in aid of the Prince Albert II Foundation of Monaco. The Eco Art Parade 2009 is an environmental art exhibition and this year's theme was the Bonelli’s Eagle, an endangered species of the Mediterranean. The Foundation supports the protection of this eagle. The photo is entitled "Love your Life" by Gitte Peters - one of my favourite exhibits and located in the beautiful Casino Gardens.

He still whispers in my ear when I get despondent, gently nudges me back on the path of self belief whenever I veer off, and urges me toward my goals and dreams. I can hear his wise words in many situations. Dad was an armchair philosopher, a sage with an encouraging smile. He could also be tough when required, and didn't mince his words. Whenever I said I couldn't do something, he'd tell me in no uncertain terms that if that's what I believed, then that was what would become true.

A good way to end the week

Nothing quite like a pamper session at Bath's Thermae Spa to get the weekend off to a great start. Met a friend mid-morning then we headed for the rooftop pool, where you simply glide through the warm mineral-rich waters (that's Bath Abbey in the distance). Then we dragged ourselves down to the aroma steam rooms, where you can cool off under the waterfall shower before heading down to the Minerva Pool.

Here, the gentle current effortlessly tugs you around the pool. Then it was back to the rooftop (my favourite) to finish the session. All too soon it was over, so we consoled ourselves with lunch. It's a tough life. Ahh... already planning the next visit.

The immortal words of Jenson Button as he stormed home to win the Monaco Grand Prix on Sunday. It was a double whammy for me, not only because I'm supporting Jenson like crazy, but because Monte Carlo is one of my favourite places in the world. It's inspired the setting for some of my stories, not to mention heroes ;)

After a pretty much faultless race, Jenson's only mistake came after the chequered flag when he parked his car in the wrong place. It was a testament to how fit F1 drivers need to be that he was able to run back to the winner's podium, barely breaking a sweat. Ah, bless him.

Guess who's the inspiration for my next fictional hero?

Small and spicey fruit cakes decorated with a white cross, Hot Cross Buns are an Easter tradition here in the UK to celebrate the religious significance of Good Friday and the Christian Easter festival.

Victorian street vendors would sell their wares to cries of "Hot Cross Buns! Hot Cross Buns! This soon morphed into the nursery rhyme above.

Slap up to date, Jamie Oliver has a delish recipe for these tasty buns ... Slice the buns in half, spread with marmalade and cover in vanilla custard. Soak for 15 minutes, bake on gas mark 4 for 15 minutes, then pop under the grill. Yum!

Apparently, £3 billion has been lost in productivity in the last five days, plus we're running out of essential salt/grit. But hey, let's focus on the fun. Why even human rights campaigner, Shami Chakrabarti, confessed she had fun making a snowman with her six-year-old.

So, there you have it. We should all just stop worrying, go out and have fun, build a snowman or two. Now, why didn't I think of that? Probably because I've spent the past week worrying about my hubby who starts work at 4am and drives through the snow and ice all day doing essential deliveries so people like Will Young can continue to play with his snowballs.

Later today, I'm going to (belatedly) write out my goals for the year with timescales attached, while polishing off the last of the chocolates. Which means that topping the goals list might be that old chestnut ... losing weight.

I'm heading into the final week of NaNoWriMo with a nice healthy word count behind me, which means I just have to manage a few hundred words a day to reach the 30 November deadline. The story's had its ups and downs and there'll be a lot of revision to do, but overall it's moved along well enough. The process has been hard, but enjoyable, plus it's amazing how liberating it can be to just write and not worry too hard about the internal editor sitting on your shoulder as you work. During the process I've often slipped into what Chris Baty in No Plot? No Problem! calls 'the zone' "that place where you become a passive conduit to a story" which "exercises your brain in weird, pleasant ways and just makes life a little bit more enchanted." Amen to that.

This has been my first NaNo experience, but I'm thinking it won't be the last.

Today I'd arranged to meet a friend for a nice relaxing morning at the Thermae Bath Spa, followed by lunch and some shopping. En route, we detoured to one of the High Street shops to buy robes rather than waste money keep hiring them at the Spa. Of course, the shop we found ourselves in had started its summer sale ...

Four hours later, following several must-have purchases, morning coffee with biscuits and copious visits to the fitting rooms, we emerged for lunch at a local pasta restaurant.

Well, the Spa's not going anywhere, is it? But a summer sale's a summer sale :)

Britain's Got Talent ... in more ways than one

He was knocked out of last year's competition and while he admits to being "gutted" he was determined to make it back this year. "I just trained harder and I've just got bigger and better." Those words will become my mantra!

All writers know about rejection and how "gutted" we feel when we receive one. But if we turn ourselves around, and if we train harder and get bigger and better we too can achieve our dreams.

Talent isn't just about the gifts we're given, it's about choosing the right mental attitude to drive us forward, and applying a big dose of courage to the mix.

Take a read of the following message from Rhonda Penders which gives the background for this fabulous book now available from The Wild Rose Press. Not only is it a great story, but all proceeds from the sale of this book will be donated to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital.

Judith Rochelle, is one of our multipublished authors at The Wild Rose Press as well as a personal friend. In late summer, 2007 I approached her with an idea of a project that would enable RJ and me to give something back for all the wonderful things that had happened to us since we opened in May 2006. I wanted to find an organization that I felt everyone, everywhere would care about and really embrace. While many qualified, the one that kept coming back to my mind was St. Jude's Children's Hospital.

A few days later, Judith created a synopsis and a proposal for a book incorporating romance, suspense and St. Jude's. It took my breath away at what she'd come up with. Judith wrote the book, RJ and I edited it, and Kim Mendoza did the beautiful cover. None of us, including the publishing company, will receive any compensation; every penny will go to St. Jude's. Children's Hospital.

The result of this, is the amazing Crimson Rose book called "On the Run" by Judith Rochelle. The book will be offered in both print and electronic format. The amount raised will be announced on our web site twice a year. The first report to be posted at the end of June 2008.

Movie Fest

Seeing as I'd met my writing goals for the week, I allowed myself a TV movie fest this weekend. I watched two outstanding films, both of which have been out for some time, but have found a place on my favourites list.

First was The Shawshank Redemption, based on a short story by Stephen King. Brutal and terrifying, but amazingly poignant. Now Morgan Freeman's voice drips over me like warm chocolate at the best of times, but as Red, the story's narrator ... well, I just wallowed. Favourite part was when Tim Robbins' character plays Mozart over the loud speakers and Red narrates:
"I have no idea to this day what those two Italian ladies were singing about. Truth is, I don't want to know. Some things are better left unsaid. I'd like to think they were singing about something so beautiful, it can't be expressed in words, and it makes your heart ache because of it. I tell you, those voices soared higher and farther than anybody in a grey place dares to dream. It was as if some beautiful bird had flapped into our drab little cage and made these walls dissolve away, and for the briefest of moments, every last man in Shawshank felt free.".
Fabulous acting, wonderful direction by Frank Darabont and terrific ending. Note to self - get the DVD.

Second was Frequency, written by Toby Emmerich. Wow - I wish I'd written that! The premise was great, the plot twists with the best of them, but mostly it was the acting that did it for me. Dennis Quaid was outstanding, and the part when he said goodbye to his son (and I'm not giving anything away, because there are loads more twists coming after this bit) had me burbling like a baby. Wonderful!

Life has been hectic. I'm eagerly awaiting the final sign-off for The Diamond Virgin which releases from Wings ePress in January 2008. This was the first book I had contracted and so it's very special to me.

I've also just finished galleys for my forthcoming release with The Wild Rose Press. Now all I'm waiting on is the release date for A Temporary Arrangement - very exciting.

But just in case you think I'm getting some slack-off time ... I've already received first edits on the May 2008 release with Samhain, so now I'll need to get cracking on Satin Lies.

Strange woman that I am, I just love the editing process. Revisiting the story is always fun, but it's the strenthening of the work, the tightening, the stripping down to the basics that really lights me up. There's always so much to learn. Plus, I've been incredibly lucky to work with such awesome editors who really know their stuff, and yet are patient, kind and understanding. I hope they're all planning on taking a long and relaxing break over the holidays. They deserve it.
